Beyond Rio
While the [Earth Summit->] international negotiations in Rio did not, as expected, lead to groundbreaking change, local and regional authorities have once again appeared as a source of hope and shown their determination to lead the pace of change.

Several Covenant of Mayors Signatories, including the Minister for Environment at the Brussels Capital Region and the Mayors of Malmö and Heidelberg, were represented at the summit during side events organised by the Committee of the Regions and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It was on this occasion that the Committtee and UNEP signed an agreement to promote sustainable cities and regions from Europe and other continents at a global level.

The Committee of the Regions has in addition adopted a Six Point Action Plan on Sustainable Development, which includes three references to the Covenant of Mayors initiative.

Ahead of the summit, several Covenant of Mayors Signatories also joined forces to adopt a set of proposals which provide leads and recommendations for the energy transition of cities and towns. More information :
