City of Aachen: Partnering for cycling
Improving mobility, relieving congestion, enhancing citizens’ quality of life are all items on the agenda of Covenant of Mayors Signatories. One great contribution towards this goal is cycling, an activity which the signatory city of Aachen is putting great emphasis on, notably through its « Cycling in Aachen » (‘FahrRad in Aachen’ ) campaign.

One key aspect of this campaign is the numerous partnerships the city has established with local stakeholders, associations and institutional bodies with the ambition of getting an ever greater number of citizens on their bikes. All age groups are targeted by the campaign, including senior citizens who are rediscovering the benefits of cycling. In this framework, the city cooperates with the German Road Safety Organisation and the Road Safety Advisory Service from the Aachen Police to offer free training programmes to residents.

In addition, since 2010 the city has also been organising a « Bicycle-Friendly Employers » competition, aiming to reward companies that encourage their staff to bike to work. For this particular action, the city has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and with the German Cyclists Association.
