Basque Energy Agency presents cooperation model with signatory cities
On the occasion of the Intelligent Energy - Europe Info Day, held on 24 January 2012 in Brussels, Belgium, the Basque Country regional energy agency (EVE) presented its activities as Covenant Coordinator and the key role it plays in helping municipalities from the region in the preparation and implementation of their Sustainable Energy Action Plans.

The presentation was part of the "Local Energy Leadership & Local Investments" workshop, which gave EVE’s representative Natalia Díaz de Arcaya an opportunity to showcase the SEAP coordination and support activities carried out by the agency and co-financed as part of the Intelligent Energy-Europe project ENNEREG.

The audience was able to learn more about the comprehensive and well-structured framework established by the energy agency for its cooperation with local authorities in the framework of the Covenant of Mayors. EVE’s guidance and support is provided throughout the whole Covenant process, from the actual decision to sign the initiative – which includes a suitability analysis – to the actual implementation and monitoring of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan. The agency helps the municipalities pinpoint the landmark actions to be undertaken, taking into account technical and financial considerations, and also provides assistance in identifying the key governance structures to be established. Individual, tailor-made support is thus secured for signatories from the Basque region lacking the adequate administrative, technical or financial resources to elaborate their plans and bring them to fruition.

Alongside EVE’s presentation, the municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz – European Green Capital 2012– provided an overview of its ambitious Sustainable Energy Action Plan, approved by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
