Covenant Signatory Cities of over 100,000 inhabitants invited to apply to 2016 Green Capital Award
The European Commission invites Covenant of Mayors signatory cities of over 100,000 inhabitants – a change from the previous editions which required minimum 200,000 – to apply to the 2016 European Green Capital Award. Cities having developed sustainable energy and overall environmentally-friendly initiatives supporting citizens’ quality of life will be well positioned to compete for this prestigious prize.

The deadline for application is 17 October 2013 and the winner will be announced in June 2014. Candidate cities can apply online at

The following 12 key fields of action will be evaluated by the jury :

  • climate change, mitigation and adaptation ;
  • local transport ;
  • green urban areas incorporating sustainable land use ;
  • nature and biodiversity ;
  • ambient air quality ;
  • quality of the acoustic environment ;
  • waste production and management ;
  • water management ;
  • wastewater treatment ;
  • eco-innovation and sustainable employment ;
  • energy performance ;
  • integrated environmental management.
