Covenant cities' commitments featured on UN Climate Action NAZCA Portal

The Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA) portal was launched in 2014 during the UN Climate Change Conference in Lima with the objective of showcasing initiatives of non-Party stakeholders, including local and subnational authorities, within the scope of the Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA).

In October 2015, the Covenant of Mayors becomes an official data partner of NAZCA. This means that Covenant signatories will have their GHG-emission reduction commitments featured on the website of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Thanks to the huge mobilisation of local and subnational authorities in the Covenant of Mayors, the initiative will provide the largest data set to be integrated into NAZCA so far. As such, UNFCCC will use a phased approach to gradually add Covenant signatories over time. This approach will be based on population size and submission of Sustainable Energy Action Plans.

Executive Secretary of UNFCCC Christiana Figueres said: “I am delighted that the Covenant of Mayors has joined the NAZCA portal - the place where increasing numbers of cities, states, regions alongside companies and investors are showcasing ambitious climate action”.

The Covenant of Mayors will continue showcasing commitments and actions taken by its signatories on the way to the international negotiations of COP21 in Paris.
