Covenant of Mayors and the private sector
In view of the budget crisis that has taken its toll on Europe, and which has considerably reduced the scope for action of local authorities, cooperation with the private sector is increasingly emerging as a central element to reach the Covenant of Mayors objectives.

Signatory cities to the Covenant of Mayors have well understood this and are much determined to explore innovative collaboration opportunities with businesses, companies and other private entities operating within their territories. This was notably demonstrated on the occasion of the EU Sustainable Energy Week, during which Covenant Signatories exchanged views and strategies with the private sector through the session "Covenant of Mayors signatories meet business to convert plans into actions", co-hosted by the Covenant of Mayors Office and the European Economic and Social Committee.

The event brought together representatives of major European industrial associations, European employers and workers groups, the cities of Sunderland and Helsinki and the Province of Barcelona, to discuss how the cooperation between local authorities and the private sector can be further enhanced and lead to green growth and job creation. Among the session highlights, the city of Helsinki presented the recently-launched “Climate Partners Network” with 20 large companies committed to mitigating climate change in Finland. Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council highlighted the city’s “Economic Masterplan” that brings together businesses, universities and the public sector working towards a low-carbon economy.
