Covenant of Mayors’ extension to South Mediterranean Region
The necessary extension of the Covenant of Mayors to the South Mediterranean region was presented as a key outcome of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) plenary session held in Bari, Itlay, on 29 and 30 January 2012, and co-chaired by President of the Committee of the Regions Mercedes Bresso.

A year after the emergence of the Arab Spring movement, the aim of the meeting was to help local communities in the region to establish an innovative regional and cohesion policy, oriented towards sustainability, economic and social development.

ARLEM members have thus advocated for the extension of the Covenant of Mayors to South Mediterranean cities and regions. Acting as rapporteur on the issue of renewable energies and their potential to foster social and economic progress, Committee of the Regions’ member Michel Lebrun hailed the Covenant as a “model for collective action”>> in this sector. He also presented the initiative as a major tool to provide local and regional authorities with the means and support mechanisms necessary to take the lead in this field.
