Covenant of Mayors highlighted as strategic ‘key action’ in Commissions’ Energy Security paper !
In its [communication on the European Energy Security Strategy->] dated May 28th, the European Commission makes special reference to the Covenant of Mayors and the crucial role of Sustainable Energy Action Plans in reducing EU’s external energy dependency.

Under the chapter “Moderating Energy Demand”, the Covenant is indeed pinpointed among five strategic key actions to be taken by Member States. More specifically, the document states that “Member States should speed up to achieve the 2020 energy efficiency target”, “notably through accelerated implementation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plans submitted by municipalities participating to the Covenant of Mayors”.

This reference to the Covenant of Mayors is a crucial political endorsement of the initiative’s impact, which now includes close to 6, 000 signatory cities, among which over 3, 500 have already submitted their action plans. The ball is now in Member States’ court to support their local authorities in reaping the full benefits of the Covenant of Mayors implementation.
