German Signatories launch new Covenant of Mayors Club
Following the footsteps of the French and Croatians, who already launched their own platforms, German Signatories have now inaugurated their national club, following a high level event held on 25 October, in Heidelberg, in the presence of the City Mayor Eckart Würzner, and representatives of 50 German local authorities.

The aim of the newly-formed club is to foster networking opportunities at the national level - in a context conducive to fruitful experience-sharing - elaborate common positions and formulate recommendations to national decision-makers for the development of legislative and financial instruments supporting sustainable energy policies.

In a video message addressed to participants, EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger enthusiastically congratulated the launch of this new initiative. “I see the Covenant of Mayors as an important basis for our common energy strategies,” he commented, expressing the European Union’s need for “cities which are innovative to reach the objective of a carbon-neutral European economy in the next 40 years.”

National Covenant Clubs are to be created in a total of 12 European countries. They are coordinated by Energy Cities and Climate Alliance in the framework of the IEE-funded NETCom project. The Club members will meet twice a year. In addition, regular exchanges are to take place via an online discussion forum.
