Renovation of existing housing: The Albertslund model
The Danish municipality of [Albertslund->], a Covenant of Mayors Signatory, was elected Nordic Energy Municipality 2011 for its innovative methods and solutions in the renovation of existing building stocks.

Considering that buildings account for 40% of its total energy consumption, the local authority sought to come up with cost-effective solutions applicable to a large number of different building types. It thus planned the renovation of 18 of its 42 residential areas, targeting buildings that were built between the 1960s and 80s. Ahead of the expected large-scale deployment, a number of pilot projects have already been implemented, with a series of houses turned carbon-neutral thanks to solar prism technologies.

Through an exciting cooperation between citizens, local industry and the municipality, we have managed to develop and – more importantly – test a wide range of full-scale solutions. Because it should be easy to be green. And this is exactly what the Albertslund concept achieves by combining technical solutions with economic visions and better housing,” said Mayor Steen Christiansen.

This model, dubbed “Orbiter concept”, is to be applied to existing building stock all over the country. Co-financed by EU funding, the project was also supported by the Danish Energy Agency. Watch the presentation video in English or Danish.
