Rio+20: President Bresso calls for a global platform to share Europe’s experience on the Covenant of Mayors
Ahead of the [UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20)->], President of the [Committee of the Regions (CoR)->] Mercedes Bresso called for the set-up of a global platform of good practice exchange, through which “{Europe could share its experience on the Covenant of Mayors”}.

President Bresso delivered this statement on the occasion of a meeting with Secretary-General of the Rio+20 Conference Sha Zukang, held in the framework of the Global Ministerial Environment Forum. This event, sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), brought together environment ministers from over 100 countries, gathered on 20-22 February in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of the last major meeting to be held before the Rio summit in June of this year. Joined by an EU delegation including European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik and Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard, Mercedes Bresso presented green-economy initiatives from cities and regions and emphasized the need for a greater involvement of local and regional authorities in environmental and sustainable development policy-making and programme implementation at global level.

In her opening statement to the forum, Ms. Bresso drew attention to the Local Agenda 21 programmes spearheaded by numerous cities and regions as a follow-up to the 1992 Rio conference. Likewise, she mentioned the European Green Capital scheme and stressed the need to capitalise on this grassroots experience by strengthening, broadening and adapting it. During her meeting with Mr. Zukang, the CoR President also welcomed the launch of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative.
