Seven signatory cities to take part in EU-funded energy saving project
Seven Covenant of Mayors signatory cities are to take part in a European project aimed at improving the energy management of public buildings. Dubbed ['SMARTSPACES’->], the project will be implemented in 11 pilot sites and over 550 buildings, notably in the Covenant cities of Milan, Birmingham, Bristol, Leicester, Hagen, Lleida and Murcia.

Europe’s building sector represents a huge, largely untapped potential for energy saving. In light of this, the new SMARTSPACES project will exploit the potential of ICT including smart metering for significant energy optimisation in city administrations, office buildings, museums, universities but also schools, nurseries, sports and event centres.

The city authorities are expected to benefit directly through reductions in the time they need to manage the heating plants and prepare renovation investment decisions. Indirect benefits will come through the strong improvement of their economic situation via drastic energy consumption and cost reductions resulting from an optimised operation of the heating plants and electricity systems in their buildings.

Two Covenant of Mayors Supporters, EUROCITIES and Energy Cities, are also involved in the project.
