Antwerp’s EcoHuis shines a light on sustainable building
6/4/2010
The EcoHuis Antwerpen (EcoHouse Antwerp) is a refurbished industrial warehouse, which showcases sustainable building. The building serves as a demonstration centre for citizens and offers energy and environmental advice to its visitors. It also acts as a meeting place, and includes an exhibition centre, eco-garden and eco-café.
The EcoHuis is one of the driving forces behind the green projects currently underway in the city of Antwerp. It aims to accelerate the emergence of Antwerp as a green city. To this end, the EcoHuis focuses primarily on the issues of housing in existing urban areas, and the environmental behaviour of citizens in and around their homes.
Among its many features, the EcoHuis also demonstrates innovative sustainable construction techniques for low energy and passive houses. Through an “eco-practice” builders can calculate potential savings in energy, water and material use. They can also receive tailor made advice about how to make their building practices greener. The eco-practice facility at the EcoHuis also supports five other eco-practice desks in various districts of Antwerp.
Together with twenty local authorities in the region, the city of Antwerp has made a large thermo-graphic photo of the region, and developed a website where households can measure the energy losses of their own roof: http://zoominopuwdak.antwerpen.be/
