Local Authorities for the Energy Security of Europe

Our experience in building sustainable energy concepts with cities dates back to 2007 with the creation of the Covenant of Mayors

Günther Oettinger – EU Commissioner for Energy

On 9 October 2014 the European Commission will host a High-Level Conference on Energy Security, in the context of the Covenant of Mayors initiative. Six EU member states are particularly vulnerable to energy supply disruptions as they import 100% of their gas from Russia. The conference will present opportunities to witness how cities from these most exposed countries are taking action to wean themselves off Russian gas, through smart investments in sustainable buildings and transport, renewable heating networks and an overall more intelligent city planning.

The Conference will take place in Brussels (SQUARE BRUSSELS MEETING CENTRE | Rue Mont des Arts, 1000 Brussels) from 14.00 to 19.00.

Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Energy Günther Oettinger will deliver the opening statement along with President of the Committee of the Regions Michel Lebrun . The concluding remarks, followed by a cocktail at 19:00, will be given by the following speakers:

  • Dominique Ristori, Director General - European Commission, DG Energy
  • Jerzy Buzek, MEP, Chair of the ITRE Committee - European Parliament
