€400 million EIB-Belfius scheme to support sustainable smart cities in Belgium
10 July 2014 - 10:27

Created thanks to an agreement between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Belfius Bank, the 'Smart Cities & Sustainable Development' programme will support Belgian cities & towns in becoming sustainable and smart.

Launched beginning of June 2014, the €400 million financing scheme will allow Belgian local authorities to benefit from preferential rate loans for the implementation of their "smart and sustainable" mobility, urban development and energy efficiency projects. The objective is to minimise borrowing costs for municipalities in order to support their innovative and sustainable approach. The EIB and Belfius will each provide half of the funds.

EIB Vice-President Pim van Ballekom stated, "With this programme [...] we are aiming to foster a strategic and integrated approach among public authorities and local decision-makers, fully in keeping with the 'Europe 2020' objectives of the European Union."

"[Men and women of today and their future generations] are the driving force behind [this programme] and also the main beneficiaries: these projects are being carried out with the citizens foremost in mind." - Dirk Gyselinck, Member of Belfius Bank’s Management Committee.
