Covenant signatory Ayuntamiento de Gijón is the first local authority to benefit from the new technical assistance facility of the European Energy Efficiency Fund (EEEF).

The objective of the new EEEF technical assistance programme is to support cities and regions in preparing bankable investment programmes in the areas of energy efficiency (mainly public building renovation and street lighting upgrades) as well as small scale renewable energy.

Through its participation in the new EEEF facility, the Covenant city of Gijón will launch a €20 million investment programme in renovation works. In its ambitious programme, Gijón will finalise energy audits for 98 public buildings and 40,000 street lighting points, and identify a set of suitable energy efficiency and renewable energy measures.

Gijón will work with an ESCO in order to realise the foreseen actions in a timeframe of two years. The Spanish city will benefit from dedicated support by the EEEF throughout the entire process, such as in the preparation of energy audits and the public tendering.

The European Energy Efficiency Fund warmly invites other cities to apply for its new technical assistance programme. You can find all information on applying for the EEEF programme here!
