SIMPLA project supports cities in harmonising their Covenant Action Plans with their urban mobility plans

The Horizon 2020 SIMPLA project provides support to cities to harmonise their Covenant of Mayors Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) with their Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).

The SIMPLA project - Sustainable Integrated Multi-Sector Planning - aims to assist in particular small- to medium-sized cities with a population ranging from 50,000 - 350,000 people to engage in harmonised planning in order to integrated their sustainable energy & climate with their mobility plans. SIMPLA runs from 2016-2019 and involves cities, regions and research centres from six EU Member States (Italy, Austria, Spain, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria).

This project fosters the capacity of local governments to engage in harmonised local planning through a concise and a precise 4-step approach:

  • The SIMPLA Guidelines provide a practical, step-by-step tool to guide the harmonisation process
  • Involved local authorities receive real-life training on how to develop harmonised SECAPs and SUMPs. Furthermore, 6 webinars will extend the outreach of this training to any interested local authority
  • The most motivated local authorities can benefit from further dedicated coaching from experts to finalise the harmonisation of their plans and find funding for implementation
  • As an end-result, local authorities have planned energy, climate action and mobility together, which enables them to maximise synergies, increase energy efficiency and pave the way to decongestion.

A multitude of players from the Covenant Community are involved in the SIMPLA project, namely the signatory cities Dobrich (Bulgaria) and Alba Iulia (Romania), the Covenant Coordinators Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Tuscany (both Italy), the provinces of Zaragoza and Huelva (both Spain), as well as the Covenant Supporter Union of Bulgarian Black Sea Local Authorities.

The SIMPLA project will soon launch a call for recruitment of beneficiary local authorities in Austria, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia. Visit the project website to stay tuned!
