The EU is offering EUR 750,000 to a European city that integrates an aesthetically pleasing PV system in a protected historic urban district.

Currently, architectural and planning rules for protected historic urban districts often constrain the integration of photovoltaic systems. Creative and innovative solutions are required in order to overcome this challenge, where PV technology is integrated in a harmonious way and respects the cultural heritage of such a city district.

The Horizon Prize "Photovoltaics meets history" will reward a European city that manages to fulfill the following conditions with its PV solution:

  • Supply at least half of a historic district's electricity
  • Have a minimum capacity of 50 kilowatt-peak
  • Must have operated continously in the historic district at least for 6 months

Other essential award criteria are notably the quality of the solution in term of architectural and aesthetic design, its impact on reducing emissions and saving energy, its adaptability and replicability (to different locations and types of buildings) and its minimal impact on buildings.

Cities can apply until the 26th of September 2018!
